Nigerian under-20 star Kenneth Omeruo is reportedly set to be Andre Villas-Boas’ second defensive recruit this year, with his performances during the 2011 U-20 World Cup in particular having drawn considerable interest from the Chelsea scouts.

Eighteen-year-old Omeruo has claimed that the Blues have reached an agreement with Belgian outfit Standard Liege for his transfer to West London.

Chelsea appear to be targeting their threadbare defence as the main area to improve during the January transfer window, and the arrival of some young blood could go some way to helping shore things up should John Terry or Branislav Ivanovic be unavailable, rather than having others playing out of position, such as Paulo Ferreira.

Standing at 6ft 2in, he possesses the raw power and aerial ability which should serve him well in the Premier League, although it is believed that he will first be loaned out to another European club in order to get him playing regularly at a higher level and to hone his skills.

He also has the pace to keep up with the faster opposition players, while his contributions at attacking as well as defending set-pieces will be appreciated at Chelsea, where the defenders always like to chip in with their fair share of goals.

It’s possible that the young defender could migrate from a central defensive player into cover for the full backs with the athletic attributes that he has shown so far, which would help when the time comes for Ferreira and José Bosingwa to leave Stamford Bridge.

AVB has shown that he is looking to the future with some of his other recent purchases, such as Oriol Romeu and Thibaut Courtois, that will hopefully produce the goods further down the line as his youthful overhaul steadily continues.

With no official word on Omeruo’s move to England just yet, this is one that we shall have to wait on but there is rumoured to be an agreement already in place between the two clubs, which could mean Omeruo being able to be classed as a home-grown player in the Blues’ ranks.
