Although Chelsea are publicly supporting John Terry ahead of his hearing at West London magistrates court on February 1st, they have rejected a proposal for their players to wear t-shirts in support of their captain.

The England international has been charged with racially abusing QPR defender Anton Ferdinand and the Stamford Bridge club are backing him to clear his name, but don’t believe Suarez style t-shirts would be an appropriate show of support.

A club spokesman said:

“We were aware of the idea being discussed among some of the players and staff.

“The club fully supports John but did not think the wearing of T-shirts was an appropriate or helpful show of that support.”

Liverpool were widely criticised for what was considered something of a PR disaster when the players shirts they wore in support of Luis Suarez, who had been found guilty of racially abusing Manchester United left-back Patrice Evra and the Uruguayan was handed an 8-match ban.

I’m glad that Chelsea won’t be going down a similar route to the Anfield club as I personally found the Suarez shirts inappropriate and they’ve been criticised by just about everyone that’s not associated with Liverpool. They’re standing by their player, which is up to them but I don’t believe that it sent out the right message.

If Terry is found guilty then he deserves every punishment that he gets, but in the meantime he needs to concentrate on his football and the club don’t want to risk contempt of court by turning the situation into a circus with stupid t-shirts.
