It probably should have happened before now, but Fabio Capello has finally included Chelsea’s Daniel Sturridge in the England squad for the friendlies against Spain and Sweden.

The young forward has built on the form he showed last season during a loan spell at Bolton and has impressed since breaking into the Chelsea starting lineup by scoring five goals in 11 games for Andre Villas-Boas’ side.

Capello believes Sturridge has improved a lot as a player and praised his versatility:

“He’s an interesting player.

“I saw him play right wing, left wing and centre forward. He has improved a lot.”

John Terry has been included in the squad despite being the subject of a police and FA investigation over an alleged racist remark, but is expected to be rested against the world champions Spain and Frank Lampard could be the man to take the armband. Ashley Cole is also in the squad.

Joe Hart (Man City), Scott Carson (Bursaspor), David Stockdale (Ipswich); Glen Johnson (Liverpool), Phil Jones (Man Utd), Gary Cahill (Bolton), John Terry (Chelsea), Ashley Cole (Chelsea), Leighton Baines (Everton), Phil Jagielka (Everton), Joleon Lescott (Man City), Kyle Walker (Tottenham); Frank Lampard (Chelsea), Jack Rodwell (Everton), Stewart Downing (Liverpool), Gareth Barry (Man City), Adam Johnson (Man City), James Milner (Man City), Scott Parker (Tottenham), Theo Walcott (Arsenal); Darren Bent (Aston Villa), Daniel Sturridge (Chelsea), Gabriel Agbonlahor (Aston Villa), Bobby Zamora (Fulham), Danny Welbeck (Man Utd).
