New Chelsea signing Raul Meireles has defended his transfer deadline day move to the London club, and stated that he left Liverpool to win silverware, not because of financial reasons.

The Portugal international completed a spectacular last gasp transfer to the Stamford Bridge outfit just before the window closed, and despite being criticised by some factions of the Liverpool support, feels he has done nothing wrong.

“These are things that happen in football. I can only say good things about Liverpool. It was a fantastic year. People think I am a Judas and that it was because of the money. It was not because of that. I will explain it later. Things are still fresh,” he told Radio e Televisao de Portugal.

The 28-year-old impressed in his first season in England in 2010-11, but is believed to have felt a first team place at Anfield would not be forthcoming after the summer signings of Jordan Henderson and Charlie Adam.

Meireles has also stated however that he has no hard feelings against the Merseyside side, but is looking forward to challenging for silverware at Chelsea.

“It all happened very fast. I am not the only one to blame for my exit from Liverpool, but I will never stop loving the club and I have great friends there.

“The most important thing is to give my all every time and try to help Chelsea win titles,” he concluded.

Meireles may well be in line to make his debut for Chelsea at the weekend, as Andre Villas Boas’ team take on Sunderland a the Stadium of Light on Saturday.

please start him along with Ramires and Lampard

Lamps can play a deeper role in MF and provide necessary long passes and going front when given the chance

Mata at LW and Sturridge RW i have no opinions on ST

Unfortunately, I think Meireles will be used to mask Lampard’s deficiencies just like Ballack was used for.

Poor Ramires, doesn’t deserve to be dropped just so we can accommodate the carthorse, who can no longer move for a whole 90.

Lampard has been awful, it’s futile to build a midfield around a 33-yr-old.
