Why Chelsea should make an approach for Barca starlet

Much hype has been written about Mata’s cameo appearance on Saturday. He is a talent and certainly welcome at Stamford Bridge but is not a messiah and cannot fix Chelsea’s problems on his own.

Although Chelsea are in desperate need of a midfield playmaker this kind of player rarely comes along. Try naming ONE in the Premiership of the stature and talents of Xavi or Iniesta. United, City, Arsenal nor Chelsea possess one.

It is no coincidence that Barca are now on a different level to other top chasing European clubs. Indeed Barcelona have a youngster (Thiago Alcântara) who cannot force his way into their team and is now further down the pecking order due to the arrival there of Fabregas. Roman Abramovich should have been tempting Barcelona, who themselves have a desperate need for a quality left-back with Ashley Cole and money to buy their up and coming youngster. Chelsea already have readymade replacements for Cole in BOTH Pat Van Aanholt AND the excellent Ryan Bertrand.

AVB has been quietly recruiting some much needed young talents recently and a player of the quality and undoubted talent of Thiago Alcântara could prove to be a master stroke. The 20 year old Italian born magician was bought up in Spain and is the son of a former Brazilian World cup winner. In a few seasons time his price will be up there with the Messi’s, Iniesta’s Xavi’s etc.

Let us hope that Juan Mata’s appearance on Saturday is going to prove to be some kind of pointer of things to come. As for the future I am desperately hoping that at least some of Roman Abramovich’s advisors are pointing him in the direction of Thiago Alcântara rather than the unobtainable Modric (due to Levy) or the very average Moutinho at Porto.
