Yossi Benayoun could be used as bait in Chelsea’s attempts to sign Luka Modric the Daily Mail understands.

The Stamford Bridge club are still in the hunt for the Croatian midfield despite Tottenham insisting they aren’t selling.

A new bid of £30 million was rumoured this week but now it seems that Benayoun could be used as a makeweight.

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp is a huge admirer of the Israel captain and tried to snatch him from under the nose of Chelsea after he left Liverpool last summer.

It was a season to forget for the 31-year-old creative midfielder as he ruptured his Achilles tendon and spent seven months on the sidelines.

Despite his bright pre-season performances and ability to link up with former Liverpool room mate Fernando Torres, new boss Andre Villas-Boas is prepared to sacrifice him to snare Modric.

The Portuguese coach has already stressed the importance of players who can add a fluidity and unpredictability to Chelsea’s stiff system with both Benayoun and Modric fitting that profile.

However Villas-Boas sees Modric as the one who is more adept at playing ‘between the lines’ and is prepared to tempt Spurs with the prospect of a cash-plus-player offer.

A move to White Hart Lane is likely to appeal to Benayoun who will struggle to break into the Chelsea midfield next season and Redknapp could be persuaded to take him and let the unhappy Modric leave.

Delighted we will keep our unhappy player, just like Arsenal did with Fabregas 2 years ago who went on to have his best season ever!

So much testosterone flying here. Guys settle down, It’s just football. Lets start by saying that Modric is a good player and Spurs is a good team with exceptional players like Bale, Van der Vaart and Modric to have a chance to knock on the door of the top five, “IF” they have an exceptional season.
Chelsea does needs a creative midfielder and at least one tricky winger. Why should we waste our time on Modric and even give up Benayoun as makeweight for him when he wasn’t given a fair deal last season when he got injured and he’s been one of our better players in the team at the moment during the preseaon along with Sturridge and McEachran. Sneijder is much more better than Modric in my opinion and he’s also in his prime. If Chelsea wants value for money i think we should get Sneijder by all means necessary and then every team in Europe would fear the Blues just by seeing the talent we have on the field in every department and at our disposal. So I’m begging Chelsea to please sign Sneijder before Man U does. We dont want to lose another fine midfielder and the premier league because of our complacency. Blues 4 ever.
