The recent rumours regarding Chelsea chasing a new defender has raised eyebrows amongst many fans, especially as we only bought David Luiz to Stamford Bridge at the end of the last transfer window.

Players like Lucio and Pepe have recently been linked with the Blues, but I can only imagine we’ll bring in another centre-back if the suggestion that Andre Villas-Boas wants to add some homegrown talent to his squad holds any water, we are coming up short in that regard after all.

Gary Cahill has been mooted as a potential target for Chelsea, but Sky Sports have reported today that Arsenal and Chelsea are set to go head-to-head for Birmingham City’s 6ft 5in defender Scott Dann, who may come at a less inflated price than Cahill and is a more promising player, in my opinion.

The 24-year-old caught the eye of many for his performances last season, including Aston Villa, Liverpool and Stoke. Birmingham certainly seemed to miss him when he missed some of the campaign through injury as they had one of the league’s better defences prior to it and ended up getting relegated at the end of the season whilst he was out during the second half of the campaign.

Should Villas-Boas opt to bring in a homegrown centre half such as Dann, it’ll likely mean that someone like Alex or even David Luiz, who has received interest from Barcelona (doubt we’ll sell him though), will leave the club.
