The Blues took an early lead after Fernando Torres flicked on a Frank Lampard corner, and Branislav Ivanovic applied the finishing touch.
But the lead was short lived, Alex gave away a free-kick outside the box and Ryan Taylor’s shot deflected off Jonas Guierrez and into Petr Cech’s net.
The Brazilian did redeem himself late in the second half when he headed home Lampard’s free-kick, for what was thought to be the winner, until Steven Taylor took advantage of some sloppy defending in injury time and take a point for the Magpies.
But what did we learn from today’s game?
Whether Carlo Ancelotti is at Chelsea next season or not, his team selection may have had the next campaign in mind as Torres led the attack and Josh McEachran was handed a Premier League start.
Last week we saw Nemanja Vidic score a free header against us and sloppy defending cost us once again today for Newcastle’s equaliser. Lapses in concentration have become a worryingly regular occurrence this season.
It’s believed that today was a farewell to Stamford Bridge from Ancelotti, but it could be for a few of the players too and we are set for an interesting summer ahead.
