Chelsea climbed into second place in the Premier League above Arsenal last night following the Blues’ 3-1 victory over Birmingham, which put Carlo Ancelotti’s side ahead of the Gunners on goal difference.

Florent Malouda had been off the boil for some time, but the brace he scored last night will help as the Frenchman works his way back into form for the final stretch. Salomon Kalou scored Chelsea’s second goal on the night, and it was quite an impressive one…

Didier Drogba played well last night and gave the Birmingham defenders a torrid time as he did the West Brom defence at the weekend.

If there was a negative last night then it was David Luiz’s rash challenge which gave away a penalty, which did not matter in the context of this fixture as Chelsea were already leading the game 3-0 and the three points were all but in the bag. However, the Brazilian has been guilty of stupidly rash decisions before and has fortunately gotten away with it (Fulham failed to convert a spot kick he gifted them and he was also lucky to escape a red card during the 2-1 win against Manchester United). But the 23-year-old is a fine player and has time to work on this aspect of his game.

On a positive note, young left-back Ryan Bertrand looked comfortable after coming off the bench last night and delivered a wonderful cross to Malouda for Chelsea’s third…
