Last night was a disappointing one for Chelsea as Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney gave his side the advantage in their Champions League quarter-final by scoring the only goal of the match.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side will have the chance to overturn the deficit when the two sides meet at Old Trafford on Tuesday night for the return leg, but what did we learn from last night’s game?

Extra officials:

It’s not the first time this has been asked, but what are they for and how many more do we need to NOT see/do things? Patrice Evra was the last man when he brought down Ramires on the edge of the penalty area, yet the guy who has the best view in the stadium stand idly and doesn’t do a thing.

We did not perform well last night and disappointingly let United take the initiative, but after ‘ghost goals’, the Barcelona fiasco and being denied a clear penalty at the San Siro, it is becoming increasingly hard to take these sorts of decision going against us in the Champions League.

Jose Bosingwa:

Was probably our worst player last night and failed to react quickly enough to prevent Ryan Giggs from setting up Rooney’s goal. The right-back position is a problem for us in the Champions League as David Luiz is ineligible, so Branislav Ivanovic has to play in the centre with John Terry.

Can Chelsea keep a clean sheet at Old Trafford with the Portuguese defender at fullback, or is it worth starting Jon Obi Mikel in midfield and playing Michael Essien in defence?

Down, but not out:

Things could have been a little better last night if we were awarded a late penalty for Evra’s foul on Ramires, but they could also have been a lot worse if Petr Cech did not deny Javier Hernandez from extending United’s lead to 2-0 on 67 minutes, which would have left the Blues with a much bigger mountain to climb in the 2nd leg.

Chelsea will have to be a lot better if they are to turn this tie around, but it’s our last chance of silverware this season and we are good enough to do it.

What we learnt is. Bosingwa isn’t the defender we once thought. Essien is no longer the dominant force he once was. Lampard is no longer the Lampard of last year. The 4-4-2 is too flat and doesn’t no suit us. We need to convert to 4-3-3 with Torres up top by himself. Anelka is just well. He slows everything down and spends half the game on the half way line. Maybe a back 4 of Cole-JT-Alex-Iva A midfeild of Essien-Ramires-Yossi and a front 3 of Zhirkov-Torres-Bosingwa may do the trick at OT. Bosingwa can offer us pace and width down the right side, which we sorely lack.

Wayne rooney simply best but torres is simply worst….

  6. what we learned is alex fergusons tactics of intimadation to the fa and the referres works and hade that been at the other end you could of put your house on it being awarded and if not then holy blue murder! it seems as if chelsea are trying to do a masterclass barcelona on it and really with the strength and speed with the likes of super frankie ramires essien zhirkov that it should be driving on with power and pace running at defences and splitting them up

Man U bossed the game from start to finish, master tactician Ferguson, absolutely no clue Ancelotti, together with a very underperforming team on all counts. I hate Man U but I have to admire the way they set their stall out for this game and penalty or no penalty, they deserved to win. Its not over yet but they are a better team, not with better players cos we have outstanding players too, but a much more impressive manager who knows what he is doing. Chelsea as they stand will not win anything with Carlo.

Ancelloti is to blame. He exhibited GROSS incompetence. May I ask why Drogba was substituted? And he dares ask for a contract extension obviously trying to position himself for more compensation when he is fired. He lacks any form of imagination and brings NOTHING to the table. The other day alex ferguson was asking for him to be retained, guess the only other coach he requested to be kept on the job, Scolari. Why? Simply because he knows he got their number, otherwise why did he never asked for his nemesis, Mourinho to be retained. Why Carlo will not try Zirkov on right wing like Robben plays is beyond me. Carlo, try something, anything, play Cech as number nine at least for once be unpredictable. Please if you do not win in old trafford don’t bother to come back to Stamford Bridge, I think we’ll be fine without you afterall I don’t see what you are doing that Terry as a player coach cannot/will not do.

  9. Latoye says:

He got their number? Carlo beat fergie 3 times in a row in the league and Won the league last season. Play yuri on the right, its not his style, hes a more traditional winger.
As for the rest, youre just ranting. Mourinho has spoilt you all
