Many thought that Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard would be absent from the England first against Wales XI today, but the 32-year-old did start in a new look 433 formation and opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the opening minutes.

Moments later Darren Bent added a second goal and looked comfortable against a young Welsh side who seemed overawed by the occasion despite being the home side.

The game was John Terry’s first as captain since he had the armband stripped from him following a media scandal over his personal life last year.

Ashley Cole also featured for the Three Lions, who won the match 2-0, which put England top of their Euro 2012 qualifying group.
