Chelsea’s John Terry, Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole will return to the club having been released from England’s squad ahead of a friendly match against Ghana on Tuesday.

Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney and Tottenham’s Michael Dawson will also return to their clubs as all five players will be involved in the Champions League quarter-final stages over the coming weeks.

Yesterday’s match against Wales at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff was a winning return to the captaincy for Terry, which saw Fabio Capello’s side go top of their Euro 2012 qualifying group on goal difference, but the Italian will have to give the armband to yet another England player as former captain Rio Ferdinand is currently injured.

I’m glad that our players won’t have to risk their fitness in what is essentially a meaningless friendly and it could also be a good opportunity for some of the young and fringe players in the England squad to make their mark.
