Chelsea conducted two big bits of business in January. The Premier League champions bought in Fernando Torres from Liverpool for £50m and also acquired David Luiz for less than half that amount.

Carlo Ancelotti would have been hoping that the Spaniard would have been firing in the goals by now, but while Torres hasn’t been able to find the back of the net, his Brazilian acquisition is making a name for himself all over the pitch.

Recently I read somewhere that David Luiz has already become a cult hero at Stamford Bridge, and I would have to say that I fully agree. Luiz has been a revelation for the Blues thus far and has been central to Chelsea’s belated push to defend their Premier League title. The Fabricio Coloccini lookalike has formed a solid centre back partnership with Chelsea defender John Terry and has consistently shown off his exploits further up the field.

As you would expect, the Brazilian international is extremely comfortable coming out of defence with the ball and has already got a knack of scoring important goals. He followed up an equaliser against Manchester United with the opening goal against their neighbours City and will be looking to add to the two goals to his name before the end of the season. However, the question is, can he outscore fellow January transfer window signing Torres for Chelsea this season?

David Luiz is 6/4 with bet365 to outscore fellow Chelsea new boy Fernando Torres this season. bet365 spokesman Steve Freeth says:

“You’d have got double figures about Luiz outscoring Torres when the pair put pen to paper on deadline day, but on current form we make him just a 6/4 shot.”

Fernando is still odds on at 4/5, while the tie is available at 5/1. The odds are also shortening in the market on Torres to not score a Premier League goal for Chelsea this season, moving from 12/1 to 10/1.

So with David Luiz currently leading 2-0, can he outscore Torres this season? Even if he doesn’t, the Brazilian looks to have a long and prosperous future ahead of him in the Chelsea shirt.
