Chelsea are reportedly interested in signing Napoli’s highly-rated playmaker Marek Hamsik. The 23-year-old attacking midfielder, who has an excellent goal-scoring record from the centre of the park, could cost anywhere between €25 and €35M. With Roman Abramovich recently releasing the purse-strings at Stamford Bridge to bring in £50m striker Fernando Torres, Carlo Ancelotti is hopeful that further spending can help him rebuild his ageing squad with the addition of Hamsik in the summer.

The importance to Napoli of their number 17 is underlined by the reaction of Aurelio De Laurentiis, film producer and chairman of Napoli, to rumours of Hamsik’s possible departure:

“We do not intend to sell Hamsik and we are even less likely to if we reach the Champions League, it would be a disaster to see him go.”

Napoli are currently flying high in Serie A, lying in second position, 3 points behind leaders AC Milan, but such form may not be enough to keep the Slovak captain in Naples; his agent, Juraj Venglos, has admitted that there is a chance that his client could be tempted away from the San Paolo in the near future.

“I don’t like speaking about transfers, but I have heard there are many teams thinking of Hamsik. However, if a club that satisfies the needs of Napoli and Hamsik presents an offer, then there could be a division. It’s early to talk, but it is a possibility.”

Hamsik himself is aware of the attention from Europe’s elite and admits that such interest brings its own pressures,

“The offers from the big clubs are almost a weight on my shoulders.

“It means that I always have to prove myself to be a talent.”

Despite his concerns,it seems only a matter of time before we see Hamsik strutting his stuff with one of Europe’s biggest clubs, and the midfielder, who has also been linked with Manchester United, could well be coming to the Premier League this summer, in a big money transfer to Chelsea.
