At the weekend Harry Redknapp cast doubt over Carlo Ancelotti’s future at Stamford Bridge after comments he made regarding the Steven Pienaar mini-saga, which many Chelsea fans interpreted as a deliberate attempt to unsettle our club and its Italian manager.

Now it seems as though Jamie Redknapp has decided to follow in the footsteps of his dad as he suggests that Chelsea’s failure to sign the mighty and glorious footballing talent of Pienaar as some sort of calamitous cock-up, which leads him to doubt Ancelotti’s position, as well as Roman Abramovich’s commitment to the club.

The former Liverpool midfielder told SkySports.com:

“I am surprised Chelsea didn’t pull out all the stops to sign Pienaar.

“Chelsea strikes me as a club, or squad, that is crying out for some new blood, a bit of freshening up – and that’s just what new signings can do.

“I did say a while back this window might tell us about the level of Roman Abramovich’s commitment to the club right now and if I was Carlo Ancelotti, or a Chelsea fan, I would be a little bit worried that they have missed out on an absolute snip in Pienaar.”

In a way, he has a point as we all know that new blood is needed, the squad is ageing and also lacking in depth – which is admittedly a worry.

However, the reason Pienaar went to Tottenham and not Chelsea is simply because Spurs offered him more money and I’m glad that we didn’t bow down to the wage demands of an uppity 28-year-old bench warmer, even if £3m was a great fee for him.

As for Abramovich’s future at Chelsea, who knows? But if he was really that out of love with the west London club, would he have bid £19m for David Luiz? (Chelsea could even be set to improve on that offer, as Sky Sports News have just reported).

What do you think about Redknapp’s comments, does he have a point or should he stick to his enlightening punditry and misuse of the word ‘literally’?

He would say something like that though, wouldn’t he? He’s a footballer, it’s hardly gospel.
