Frank Arnesen, Chelsea Sporting Director, has confirmed that Dutch right-back Gregory van der Wiel is a Blues target, according to Ajax Life.

The Dane said:

“There’s currently not much to say about it.

“Our priority is now a central defender with Alex injured.

“Gregory is on our number one list but not currently at the top. If we’re serious, nothing will happen until the summer.”

Like many, I did not know a whole lot about van der Wiel until the young marauding fullback announced himself on the world stage at the FIFA World Cup in South Africa. The 22-year-old started two games in the tournament and has since been linked with clubs all other Europe and is billed as one of the continent’s brightest young prospects.

With Chelsea suffering some defensive frailties and Jose Bosingwa’s contract up in the summer, would it be worth selling our Portuguese right-back this January, rather than risk losing him for nothing at the end of the season?

Of course, the only problem with this is that we would lose a Champions League eligible player and be replacing him with a cup-tied one.
