It is not often that great buys come during the January transfer window, but Carlo Ancelotti may have to consider bringing in a fresh face or two as the current Chelsea squad are suffering injuries, suspensions and a general lack of bodies at the club.

Here are three players that Ancelotti should perhaps think about signing this winter:

**

Gary Cahill: Bolton are said to be suffering overall debts of around £100m which has led to speculation that the club may sell some of its assets in January. There are many clubs said to be chasing the player’s signature other than the Blues as Arsenal and Liverpool are also reportedly interested.

Chelsea have been lacking depth in the centre back position since the likes of Ricardo Carvalho decided to leave the club in the summer. The club are currently suffering injuries to both Alex and John Terry. The duo are likely to be back in action by the time the January window comes around, but there is no guarantees on their future fitness and having the option to rotate players can pay dividends for preserving the fitness of the squad.

The home-grown defender is at a good age at 24 and would of course be eligible to play in all competitions as it stands.

**

Kaka: Once upon a time Kaka was considered to be the finest player in the world whilst working with Ancelotti at AC Milan. However, since he arrived at Real Madrid the fortunes of the player are very different as he has suffered injury, lack of form and increased competition for a starting place.

The 28-year-old Brazilian has not featured for Los Blancos yet this term as he has been recovering from surgery on a long-standing knee injury, so would be available to play in the Champions League.

Despite his downturn in fortunes it is likely that Kaka would still command a high fee, but the possibility of a loan move has been mooted in the press.

**

Asmir Begovic: Chelsea’s goalkeeping problems are well documented and many feel that neither Henrique Hilario or Ross Turnbull are good enough to be Petr Cech’s understudy. Not having a confident goalkeeper between the sticks can be as unsettling for the defenders as much as it is through the fans watching the game (most likely through their hands if Hilario or Turnbull are playing).

Begovic is currently backup to Thomas Sørensen at Stoke City but would likely move if he got the chance, especially seeing as he was accused of showing Stoke disrespect by Tony Pulis. The Potters’ chief claimed that Begovic refused to play in a Carling Cup game against Shrewsbury earlier this season when Chelsea were last in for the player.

The 23-year-old Bosnian goalkeeper would count as a home-grown player as he first arrived in England back in 2003 signing for Portsmouth’s youth team – which is an extra incentive to buy.
