Chelsea are set to step up their interest in Real Madrid star Gareth Bale by submitting a £72.3 million summer bid, according to reports.

The Welshman has struggled to justify his world-record £86 million transfer fee since joining the European champions from Spurs in 2013 and has courted criticism from Los Blancos’ fans recently.

Consequently, the 25-year-old winger, who ended a 10-game goal drought last week, is thought to be considering his future amid interest from the Blues and Manchester United.

It was reported earlier this week that Jose Mourinho was weighing up a mega-money bid and, according to The Metro, the Portuguese will sanction a £72.3m offer this summer.

The report goes on to suggest that Bale, whose contract expires in 2019, would be handed a £300,000-a-week salary to join the Stamford Bridge club.

Is he worth the money? Let us know in the comments below.
