Costa

Chelsea have opened preliminary talks with La Liga club Atletico Madrid over a potential summer move for Diego Costa, according to reports.

The Blues aren’t the only club interested in the forward as Manchester City, Arsenal and Manchester United have an eye of Costa, claim the Times, but Jose Mourinho may have an advantage should 21-year-old goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois be used as a make-weight in the deal.

It’s also thought that the fact that Mourinho and Costa share the same agent in Jorge Mendes could help Chelsea’s cause as well as the current good relationship between the two clubs.

I think a lot of fans are hoping that Mourinho does land a top forward that we can rely on in the summer and many would be happy with Costa, who has scored 23 goals already this season, but I’m not entirely sure that they would be delighted if Courtois was used in the deal.

Petr Cech has a few good years ahead of him but goalkeepers are very hard to come by – especially ones as talented as Courtois – and Chelsea will have to make a decision between the two this summer. In an ideal world the Belgian would be willing to have a crack at Cech’s place in the side in the same way he was given the chance to usurp Carlo Cudicini.

Back onto Costa, it’s a long time until the summer transfer window and we’re not sure if Chelsea will want to get their deals done ahead of the World Cup or wait to see how the tournament players out, but we will be linked with every half-decent forward in world football in the meantime and it’s not as if we’re not used to constant speculation anyway.

Do you think Costa represents a good option for the Blues?
