Chelsea-Benfica-Frank-Lampard-Nemanja-Matic_2945002Jose Mourinho is returning to Stamford Bridge but may not be the only familiar face to arrive at Chelsea as the Portuguese coach wants to bring Nemanja Matic back from Benfica.

Reports in Portugal via Diario de Noticias claim the 24-year-old could return to his former for €30 million after he has managed to establish himself as one of the best young defensive midfielders in Europe after getting his chance in the first team before cementing a starting spot following Javi Garcia’s transfer to Manchester City last summer.

The reports says that Matic is Mourinho’s first choice to bolster his midfield ranks and has also been linked with Roma veteran Daniele De Rossi. But Chelsea could face competition for Matic’s signature should the likes of Monaco or Manchester United make their interest concrete.

Matic left the club back in 2011 when he was used in the deal that brought David Luiz to West London and had been on loan at Vitesse Arnhem before then. The decision to let him go was a mistake and it is ironic that as the Brazilian is linked with the exit doors, there are stories of us wanting to bring the player we lost back to the club.

The Serbian has been brilliant for Benfica over the season and is really unfortunate to finish the season without any medals as the Lisbon club surrendered top spot late in the league season, were surprisingly beaten by Guimaraes in the Portuguese cup and was of course denied a Europa League crown by Chelsea.

Matic has played in 36 games in all competitions this season and scored five goals from midfield. His current deal runs until 2018 and has a release fee of €45 million.

Would you like to see Nemanja Matic back at Chelsea this summer?

I think we do. Distinctly remember struggling in this area over the season, along with defence and the lack of a reliable centre forward.
