According to Spanish publication Marca, Real Madrid turned down a £40m bid from Chelsea on deadline day for Argentinean striker Gonzalo Higuain.

The Blues were reportedly keen to bolster their misfiring frontline as the lack of a regular goalscorer has made life difficult for manager Andre Villas-Boas. Daniel Sturridge has put in a decent contribution with his nine goals, but both Fernando Torres and Didier Drogba have been piss-poor.

It looks likely that Chelsea will be in the market for a new forward in the summer as Drogba will be out of contract and Torres must be running out of time as I can’t imagine he’ll be around next season if he doesn’t fire before the summer, could Higuain be the man for Chelsea?

Real Madrid are expected to make a move for Neymar in the summer and Higuain is already behind Karim Benzema the pecking order at the Santiago Bernabeu, so he may be surplus to requirements by the time the transfer window reopens.

    if chelsea made that move would mean they at least care they are where they are today (really sad & bad);

    but i doubt they went there with £40m, it is not chelsea’s style;
    what is chelsea’s style? they first offer a third of a player’s value, as you starting thinking they are making fun!!! then they make the player speak to the press ‘ i bloody love chelsea want to go!’ then chelsea for some reason they think this makes the player cheaper!!

    on the other hand i agree if chelsea ask, people increase the price!! that is sort of unfortunate!

    Marca is hardly a reliable source of information.

    Methinks there may have been an element of truth in this report/article. It matches the report that Majorca were intersted in making a firm bid for Torres and the fact that Torres went totally absent against Swansea on Tuesday (mind elsewhere?) Whether AVB is still in the hot seat or Jose returns in the summer who, besides Roman Abramovich knows? One thing IS for sure, I can’t see either Drogs or Torres at the club next season and a couple of NEW mainline strikers will be bought in.

    if chelsea can make 40m pond on gonzalo it means they are direction bcos gonzalo is not a kind of striker chelsa need why can’t chelsea go player like Tevez or Cavanni.

    I could see this being true, despite Marca’s daily mail like record, but the idea we would sign a Jose reject at 40mill 6 months before re-employing Jose would be daft….oh yeah, the gutter press came up with both of these stories so ‘daft’ is a given, yes
