Following a weekend in which Chelsea failed to capitalize on losses inflicted on teams surrounding them in the table due to their rather toothless performance at Carrow road, more specifically, the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool, Newcastle and more importantly Tottenham all losing, boss AVB decided to give the squad a ‘day off’. The players spent the day in the city of Majorca, more formally visited for tourism purposes, Andres Villas-Boas was quoted saying “It’s a change of environment to a different place to break the routine a bit. It’s nothing new to English teams.”
One player who did not travel with the rest of the team was talismanic midfielder Frank Lampard. To deepen the frustration on a cold Norfolk afternoon, Lampard was subbed off during the game at Norwich due to a calf injury, and though scans will have to wait until the swelling decreases, a muscle tear would usually mean 3-4 weeks out. This definitely does not make good reading for the Chelsea faithful considering the Blues have to face neighbors QPR in the fourth round of the FA cup this weekend, not to mention the small matter of the Champions league game in Naples as well as Manchester United’s visit of Stamford Bridge all within the next 28 days.
Perhaps the realization of how tough this will be, although aided by the return of Micheal Essien, without our vice-captain, may encourage manager AVB to delve in to the transfer market for the second time this month. Judging from recent performances, it would seem the squad require strengthening in the attacking third, a player with a good eye for passes, technically gifted and maybe with a bit of flair and creativity – perhaps a Juan Mata type player – would be the answer. Earlier reports concerning a possible swoop for Belgian wonder-kid Eden Hazard seem to be fading away, as well as recent speculation about Brazilian ace Willian being rubbished by the manager, will it be another hectic transfer deadline day for Chelsea?
