Chelsea has officially announced the signing of young Mexican Ulises Davila, who can play as a forward or attacking midfielder, from Chivas on a five-year deal.

A statement from the club’s official website read:

Standing 5ft 7in, he is accomplished with the ball at his feet and a fine finisher with a strong team ethic.

The 20-year-old represented his country at this year’s Under-20 World Cup in Colombia, helping them to a bronze medal with a goal in their 3-1 third-place play-off win over Gael Kakuta’s France, and appearing in all seven of their competitive matches.

Chelsea technical director Michael Emenalo spoke highly of the Mexican U20 international:

“’Ulises has been a highly-scouted player by a lot of clubs, and has made great progress in the last couple of tournaments we have seen him play in,’ he said.

“We are delighted to have been able to get this deal done, Chivas is a superb club with a strong reputation in player development and world football, and we are confident Ulises will be able to continue his fast development to become an important Chelsea first-team player.”

Davila has come through the same youth system at Chivas that helped launch the careers of Javier Hernandez, Carlos Vela and Carlos Salcido, it’s a system that Chivas president Jorge Vergara speaks proudly of:

“Once more, Chivas makes history as a team that really pushes and prepares its players in an integral fashion.

“For all of us here at Chivas it is a matter of great pride that players formed in our ranks attract the attention and get to play for the best teams in Europe, where the most competitive football is played.”

Chelsea’s chief executive Ron Gourlay was also full of praise for the Chivas setup:

“We have been very impressed with the Chivas organisation and we will look for other ways to work with them in the future.”
