Fernando Torres had a tough start to life at Stamford Bridge since his £50 million transfer from Liverpool in January and only scored one goal in 18 games, but he has promised Chelsea fans that they will see better from him next season.

Torres scored in Chelsea’s opening preseason game against Wycombe at Cobham and earned an assist after Tal Ben Haim’s bizarre own goal against Portsmouth at Fratton Park.

He believes that his sharpness is returning after a much needed summer break and is ready for the challenges ahead.

The 27-year-old said:

“It was a difficult four months for me last season but now I am settled and really happy.

“It’s a new start for me and I am feeling sharper and fitter.

“After five years without a break I could finally enjoy my holiday this summer so I am happier after a rest and some time with my family. Now I am feeling good and ready to start the new season.”

Chelsea fans will hope to see a rejuvenated Torres in their team next season and will hope that he’ll get the goals as he seeks to live up to his big price tag and high wages. The Spaniard could be a big player for us next season, do you think we’ll see the best of him during 2011-12?

For Torres to click Chelsea need to start playing to his strengths rather than trying to change his game into something unfamiliar to him. Saturdays game against Pompey was a farce and one in my view where AVB made some strategic mistakes. These mistakes don’t matter at this stage as these games are about gaining fitness. To play Torres up front in a 3 of Dan Sturridge and Malouda with no midfield playmaker behind was stupid. To then play a completely different 11 in the second half and bring Benayoun on as the playmaker for the second 45 just compounded the error. Why oh why wasn’t Torres played with Benayoun behind him for his 45 minute stint? These two know each others play so well!
Also, I do not accept AVB’s excuse of needing to see these players before deciding who to bring into the club? He HAS seen them and no doubt watched them in every game of last season via club recordings. He MUST already know that we are too slow getting forward, have no real width to speak of and no real playmaker in this squad other than a recovering Benayoun. We desperately need a winger and a class playmaker NOW. It isn’t rocket science. As for deciding which players should leave the club, who the hell gives a damn at this stage. Those decisions can be made later but for now get on and improve the squad we have with at least these two strategic and very necessary purchases for us to move forward. The longer this situation goes on the more annoyed I get at the sound bites and excuses coming out of the club and from our new Manager. I believe it is a fact that some Chelsea senior players need a reality check and instead of licking backsides for their own futures and contracts need to get their bloody fingers out with some real desire and performances. The lads have been training for 3 weeks now and only expected to play 45 minutes against a poor Pompey side. Players like Malouda and Frank Lampard should be ashamed of their performances on Saturday and should have the balls to apologise to the fans for their respective inept showings. The Manager should also have the balls and be warning them that they too are playing for a squad number next term and that reputations count for nothing. Like many Chelsea fans I have seen nothing as yet to give me any confidence that this squad will do any better than last seasons. Get your finger out Andre, let Roberto do the press conferences and the schpiel whilst you get on and actually do something to give the fans hope rather than coming out with a load of crap like this squad is good enough to win the CL…. what utter tosh!

I forgot to mention in the above ‘comment’ that it is today being reported that Man United are now preparing a £25m offer to Santos for their excellent 21 year old Brazilian playmaker Ganso. This is just the kind of player that this Chelsea squad could desperately do with but the only real reports coming out of the club is that we will make our minds up on any possible new signings ‘after’ the Asia tour? Neymar to Barca or Real Madrid, Sanchez to Barca, Aguero to Man City, now possibly Ganso to United whilst we are waiting unitl after the Asian tour? I rest my case….

Although it is apparent that we need a midfielder, winger and rightback – I dont think that Ganso is the solution. He slows down play and would not add anything to the squad. Aguero and Sanchez are the type of dynamic players we should be looking for. Modric is also interesting as he makes decisions fast, has premiership experience and never loses the ball. KTBFH

Will Torres improve? Well I hope so but still have a niggling doubt that he will. I feel
that like Roman’s last big solo buy from Inter,
we are going along the same path again. If he can regain his speed and movement as per 3 years ago, then it will be great for Chelsea. I just hope he has found his confidence over the close season. Good Luck Fernando.

Pastore is the man chelsea need in the mildfield to give it the flair and creativity it needs. AVB should also look at either arjen robben – the greatest winger to step foot at stamford bridge, or affelay the barcelona winger who is one of the brightest wingers in the world with the accuracy and pace. And Chelsea should now be playing a 4 4 2, as regretting to say it though, drogba should have this season as a bit part player if torres is to flourish. The squad SHOULD be cech, cole terry ivanovic boswinga, affelay(left wing) lampard(lm) luiz(dm) pastore(rm) robben/kalou (right wing), Torres

So we need few more signings to put skill and pace into the chelsea team, so regain the acknowledgement of being the best team in the u.k, and then the world.
