The reigning Premier League champions Chelsea beat Birmingham 3-1 at home tonight and maintain some hope of retaining their crown, albeit a slim one.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side have leapfrogged Arsenal – who drew 3-3 against Tottenham – into second place.

Florent Malouda opened the scoring after bundling the ball into the net via a Didier Drogba flick on from Paulo Ferreira’s cross.

Salomon Kalou extended the lead after breezing past a number of defenders when running from left to right and rifling a shot in from outside the penalty area.

Blues youngster Ryan Bertrand made an impressive cameo when coming off the bench in the second half and marked his performance with an assist as Malouda headed in from the fullback’s cross.

Birmingham were awarded a penalty after David Luiz committed a foul on Matt Derbyshire inside the box, which Sebastien Larsson converted successfully.
